At Aikkiya, we believe peace begins within. Learn more about our commitment to promote peaceful diversity and how it connects wellness with democracy.

Red light therapy for stress relief is more than a wellness trend — it’s part of a growing scientific understanding of how light can restore balance to body and mind. In today’s overstimulated world, we speak endlessly about peace — yet we often neglect its most immediate battleground: the mind.

As Aikkiya reminds us, peace is not only the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of balance — within our communities, our relationships, and our own bodies.

Still, the pace of modern life pushes many into a constant state of tension. Research shows that chronic stress quietly reshapes the brain, narrowing our ability to think creatively and respond with empathy (McEwen, 2017; Byron et al., 2010). The very qualities needed for cooperation and peace — patience, imagination, compassion — are the first to fade when we are exhausted.

The Science of Stress and Creativity

Stress has long been misunderstood as merely emotional fatigue, but neuroscientist Bruce McEwen (2017) described it as a biological process that, when prolonged, causes “an imbalance of neural circuitry subserving cognition, decision-making, anxiety and mood.” In simpler terms: when stress becomes chronic, our brains lose flexibility.

A meta-analysis of 76 experimental studies confirmed that high, uncontrollable stress sharply decreases creativity, while moderate, manageable pressure can sometimes enhance it (Byron et al., 2010). Balance — not intensity — drives human ingenuity.

Yet modern life rarely grants that balance. We are perpetually “on,” overstimulated by information and under-rested. Over time, this erodes not just productivity, but empathy — the cornerstone of peacebuilding.

Where Light Meets Healing

Emerging research suggests a biological path back to clarity. Scientists are discovering that specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light can stimulate mitochondria — the cell’s powerhouses — improving energy production, blood flow, and even cognitive function.

A 2023 review in the Journal of Translational Medicine found that photobiomodulation (PBM) can enhance attention, memory, and executive functioning through non-invasive light exposure (Pan et al., 2023). Near-infrared light at 800–1,000 nm penetrates the skull, triggering neuroprotective processes and increased ATP production — helping neurons recover from stress and fatigue.

In essence, light — long used as a metaphor for hope — now finds validation in neuroscience.

Closing Light

In times of chaos, light remains our oldest symbol of renewal. From the sun rituals of ancient civilizations to today’s gentle red-light glow, illumination continues to remind us that healing begins within.

Whether through quiet meditation, a walk in nature, or the subtle warmth of light therapy — reclaiming calm is not escapism. It is preparation for empathy. It is the work of peace.

In an era where democracy is being questioned and divisions deepen, we came together in March 2025 for something more than just an event. Democracy in Dissonance – a collaborative initiative between Aikkiya, the United Nations Association of Stockholm, and Folkuniversitetet – became a space for reflection, courage, and collective action.

With nearly 70 participants and four powerful speakers, the day invited us not only to discuss democracy’s crisis – but to respond with empathy, responsibility, and resilience.

Our four guest speakers brought deeply different, yet complementary, perspectives:

Silva Mertsola, reminded us of the power of language and the ideological struggle over democracy’s meaning.

Jonas Trolle grounded the discussion in real-world challenges, including radicalization and the neglect of young boys in marginalized schools.

Michael Pålsson, a legal activist, clarified the role of civil disobedience and what it means to take full responsibility in the justice system.

Martin Westin inspired the room with his message on the power of dialogue and how terms like “democracy” and “human rights” risk losing their meaning if not used with care.

The audience was highly engaged – many stayed for the entire day, and some even invited friends to join midway through. The atmosphere was intimate, the energy tangible.

As a natural follow-up to the event, we launched the “What Kind of Peacemaker Are You?” quiz – a tool for self-reflection to help you discover your peacebuilding style:

During the second part of the day, we facilitated ideation workshops where participants co-created nine project ideas, including:

A YouTube podcast to raise democratic awareness through expert interviews

Intergenerational hubs for skill exchange (digital tools, crafts, life experience)

Projects for youth not in education or employment, shaped by their own input

Community bonding activities like night football and BBQs in local areas

SL campaign on empathy and public art to shift narratives during the holidays

Monitoring of new legislation and public engagement in democratic processes

Exploring local currencies to reduce economic disparity and build resilience

Safe conversation spaces online and offline to counter hate and polarization

Study circles to build immunity to disinformation and strengthen civic bonds

The workshops were a learning process. While the method worked well, some participants felt hesitant to commit to new people or groups. What many wanted was a space to share ideas, not obligations – a valuable insight we will take forward.

We’re now exploring ways to build on the momentum. One proposal is a Democracy Forge – a physical and digital space where citizens can continue to shape and grow their initiatives together.

Many speakers have expressed their willingness to return, and some of the workshop groups are continuing their conversations.

We live in a time where democracy can no longer be taken for granted. In a previous text, I described the sense of anxiety that has slowly emerged, regarding a world where disinformation and polarization are gaining increasing ground. However, today, it is no longer enough to simply talk about defending democracy. We must also ask ourselves how we can build resilient democracies. What is required from us as individuals and citizens in order for democracy to withstand the threats it currently faces?

What is a Resilient Democracy?

A resilient democracy is not characterized by the absence of adversity and crises, but rather its ability to handle and recover from these, without losing its core democratic principles. Practically speaking, this means strong institutions capable of withstanding both internal and external threats, as well as a civil society that upholds democratic principles.

What Builds Democratic Resilience?

Research shows that certain factors can strengthen the resilience of democracy:
– Strong, independent institutions
– Education and media literacy
– Civic engagement
– Justice and equality

Research from Freedom House (2023) describes how societies where people have trust in one another and in societal institutions are better equipped to withstand authoritarian forces.

What Can You and I Do?

Sunset behind a mountain with two people helping each other up.

However, democratic resilience is not solely about large systems, societal structures, and institutions. It is also about us! We can contribute to building democratic resilience by:
– Being critical of sources
– Being willing to speak, but also willing to listen
– Engaging ourselves

Engagement does not necessarily mean becoming a politician or standing at the front of a protest every weekend. It can be as simple as voting in every election, attending open meetings in your community, or raising important issues in everyday conversations – at home, with friends, or at work. It can also involve supporting an organization you believe in. For me, engagement includes being active in Aikkya, an organization that works for democratic participation and human rights. Through my involvement here, I am also contributing to strengthening democracy.

It is crucial that we do not take our democracy for granted. A society where people engage in various ways and contexts is simply stronger in the face of authoritarian forces. Whether engagement is large or small, it contributes to us collectively shaping society, rather than merely observing it from the sidelines.

Parti-loggor i svensk politik

Child in a sandbox

Winston Churchill smoking a cigar

Read the article in English here

Smiling female friends hugging each-other

Refugee statue on water

I came across a social media post calling for a demonstration, which in my opinion is perfectly fine. However, the title deeply concerned me: “Sweden Against Islamization,” scheduled with the same time in four major cities across the country.

The person who shared the post is, to my knowledge, a loving and kind individual with grandchildren on the way, who has grown up surrounded by healthy and educated people throughout their life.

This made me wonder: if such a “good” person can support a polarizing movement, how does this affect the average person? It made me question if people really understand what populism is?

My name is Kristina Zahida Cassandra Rosic, and I am studying Political Science as well as Development and International Cooperation at Södertörn University. I have also studied Religious Studies (30 ECTS) at Uppsala University, and I am the Secretary General of the non-profit organization Aikkiya – Voices for Peaceful Diversity, working together against violent extremism.

I am also a board member of the Stockholm United Nations Association and the Tenants’ Association in Solna, and I serve as an elected member of the Rent Tribunal in Stockholm.

The purpose of this article is to highlight how the dangerous power of populism exploits people’s fears and insecurities to create division in society, and to provide you with the tools to recognize and counteract its influence. At the end of the article, you will find the references I have used as the basis for this piece.

Populism in action – UK Riots 2024

What Is Populism?

Populism can briefly be defined as a political strategy or style that views society as divided into two antagonistic groups: the “pure people” and the “corrupt elite” (Mudde & Kaltwasser, 2017).

Populist leaders use this dichotomy to portray themselves as the only true representatives of the people’s will, while depicting the elite as enemies of ordinary citizens.

This simplified dichotomy creates an us-versus-them mentality that can be extremely effective in mobilizing support, but is also deeply divisive.

1. Populism’s Exploitation of Fear

Populism’s success is often linked to its ability to exploit fear.

In a world where economic uncertainty, globalization, and cultural change create anxiety, populism offers simple answers to complex problems.

By identifying a scapegoat—whether it be immigrants, religious groups, or political opponents—populist leaders channel this fear and anger into political power (Laclau, 2005).

A central tool for populist movements is the use of fear appeal, where the fear of a perceived threat is used to influence attitudes and behaviors.

For example, rhetoric around a supposed “Islamization” of Western societies can be used to create a sense of threat to national identity and security.

This, in turn, can lead to greater acceptance of restrictive political measures and even violence against groups perceived as threats.

2. False Simplification: Religion and War

Smiling female friends hugging each-other

It is important to emphasize that we have long known that religion, in itself, is not the cause of war.

Rather, it is extremists from various ideological camps who incite violence and exploit religion, nationalism, or other beliefs to advance their agendas.

Karen Armstrong (2014) – In her book Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence, Armstrong argues that violence and war are rarely caused solely by religion.

She asserts that socio-economic, political, and cultural factors often play a much larger role and that religion is often used as a tool or justification rather than a root cause (Armstrong 2014).

Populist actors tend to portray certain religions or religious groups as the core of the conflict, but in reality, it is a minority of individuals who use religion as a cover to legitimize their violent capital and agenda.

Historical Parallels: Kristallnacht and Contemporary Populism

To understand the potential consequences of such rhetoric, we can draw parallels to historical events like Kristallnacht. On the night of November 9-10, 1938, the Nazis in Germany coordinated an attack on Jews, their homes, businesses, and synagogues. Nazi propaganda had long portrayed Jews as a threat to the German nation and part of a global conspiracy. This narrative justified violence in the eyes of many Germans (Friedländer, 1997).

If we apply this to a contemporary context where a radicalized movement claims that Muslims pose a similar threat, we could see similar patterns emerge. Rhetoric that targets Muslims as a danger to national security and culture, and which claims that this threat is orchestrated by “globalists,” can quickly lead to increased tensions and potentially violence. Such a scenario could result in attacks on mosques, Muslim businesses, and individuals, driving society into a dangerous spiral of hatred and violence. Assuming there is no resistance, as that would/could lead to civil war.

Populist Strategy and Unrest in the United Kingdom

Recently, the United Kingdom has been shaken by significant unrest following a horrific stabbing in Southport on July 29, 2024, where three small, completely innocent children tragically lost their lives and several others were seriously injured.

The perpetrator, a 17-year-old British citizen of Rwandan origin, was quickly arrested.

Although the perpetrator had no known ties to Islam, false information about his identity, nationality, and religion quickly spread on social media.

This disinformation, which falsely claimed that the perpetrator was Muslim and an asylum seeker, spread rapidly and led to violent riots and attacks on Muslim communities and asylum centers across the country (The Guardian, 2024; Wikipedia, 2024).

3. Attacks on Mainstream Media and Their Consequences

It is important to point out that even if the perpetrator had been both Muslim and an asylum seeker, he would still have been an individual criminal and not a representative of all immigrants and asylum seekers.

Judging an entire group based on the actions of one individual or group is not only unjust, but also ignorant and dangerous.

Refugee statue on water

This type of oversimplified and generalizing rhetoric is often used by populist groups to push an agenda built on fear and suspicion.

When mainstream media is also portrayed as part of a globalist conspiracy to hide the truth, it contributes to undermining public trust in established sources of information, which creates a dangerous environment where disinformation and conspiracy theories thrive, and where critical thinking is replaced by distrust and polarization.

Research shows that attacks on mainstream media not only undermine journalistic integrity but also threaten democracy.

An informed public is a fundamental prerequisite for a functioning society (Wardle & Derakhshan, 2017).

Stopping the Epidemic of Fear

To prevent such developments, it is crucial that the public takes responsibility for their education about the mechanisms of populism and its potential consequences.

Populism’s simple answers to complex problems can be tempting, especially in times of uncertainty, but history shows us that these answers often lead to more harm than good.

It is through understanding and questioning the narratives spread by populist leaders that we can prevent fear and hatred from taking hold in our societies.

At the same time, we as individuals must understand our responsibility in the democratic process. As Lührmann and Lindberg (2019) point out, autocratization often occurs through subtle and gradual changes, making it difficult to counteract before significant damage is done.

Therefore, it is up to every citizen to actively participate in protecting democracy by resisting forces that seek to undermine it. By being vigilant, informed, and engaged in public debate, we can prevent our society from sliding towards authoritarianism.

Conclusion

In summary, populism is not just a political strategy; it is a tool that, when used irresponsibly, can destabilize societies, drive people towards violence and intolerance, and in doing so, also dismantle democracies.

By spreading knowledge and promoting critical thinking, we can counteract this destructive force and work toward a more inclusive and tolerant world.

In a time of increasing uncertainty and social tensions, it is more important than ever to be aware of the forces that seek to exploit our fears for political gain.

The allure of populism lies in its simple solutions to complex problems, but these solutions often lead to division, hatred, and violence.

People who step outside the bounds of society for various reasons and commit violent acts should, of course, be held accountable, but the judgment should always be based on the individual’s words and actions—never because of their origin, appearance, or culture.

It is also crucial that we, as individuals, take responsibility for our own education.

Being informed about topics like populism and disinformation gives us the tools to critically evaluate the messages we encounter and to avoid falling for oversimplified or misleading narratives.

By actively seeking knowledge, we can resist manipulation and make decisions based on facts and understanding.

By understanding how disinformation spreads and how it undermines trust in our institutions and each other, we can better equip ourselves to stand against the destructive forces that threaten our societies.

It is up to all of us to promote a society where critical thinking, respect for facts, and inclusion are at the forefront.

By rejecting those who seek to put “us” against “them” and instead working toward mutual understanding and unity, we can build a future that is more just, peaceful, and cohesive.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a deeply rooted and complex issue with historical, political, and religious dimensions. The Bible, the Torah, and the Quran contain passages that provide insight into themes of land, territory, justice, and the consequences of disobedience or unjust actions. These passages often speak to the themes of covenant faithfulness, justice, and the repercussions of violating divine commands, particularly in relation to the land.

All three scriptures emphasize repentance, reconciliation, and the pursuit of peace, providing a framework for addressing and resolving conflicts in a manner that honors God and upholds human dignity. By highlighting these scriptural passages and principles, one can argue against any justification for violence and the eradication of another people group, advocating instead for justice, peace, and reconciliation.

Torah Insights

Torah scripture

Deuteronomy’s Blessings and Curses

Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 15

Verses 1-2:

“It will be that if you hearken to the voice of HASHEM, your God, to observe, to perform all of His commandments that I command you this day, then HASHEM, your God, will make you supreme over all the nations of the earth. All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you, if you hearken to the voice of HASHEM, your God.”

Verse 15:

“But it will be that if you do not hearken to the voice of HASHEM, your God, to observe, to perform all of His commandments and decrees that I command you this day, then all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.” (Stone Edition Tanach, Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 15)

Explanation: This passage emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commands as a condition for receiving blessings, including prosperity and peace. Conversely, disobedience leads to curses and suffering. The principle here is clear: faithfulness to God’s covenant brings blessings, while disobedience leads to severe consequences.

Deuteronomy 28:63-64

Verses 63-64:

“It will be that just as HASHEM rejoiced over you to benefit you and multiply you, so HASHEM will cause them to rejoice over you to make you perish and to destroy you; and you will be torn from upon the ground to which you come to possess it. HASHEM will scatter you among all the peoples, from the end of the earth to the end of the earth; and there you will serve other gods whom you did not know – you or your forefathers – of wood and stone.” (Stone Edition Tanach, Deuteronomy 28:63-64)

Explanation: These verses reinforce the idea that God’s favor is conditional. If the people turn away from God’s commands, they will be uprooted from their land and scattered among the nations. This theme of exile as a consequence of disobedience is recurrent in the Torah.

Leviticus on the Land

Leviticus 25:23

Verse 23:

“The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is Mine; for you are sojourners and residents with Me.” (Stone Edition Tanach, Leviticus 25:23)

Explanation: This verse underscores that the land ultimately belongs to God. The people are merely temporary residents, and this perspective is crucial in understanding the divine mandate for justice and stewardship.

Leviticus 26:14-17, 33

Verses 14-15:

“But if you will not listen to Me and will not perform all of these commandments; if you consider My decrees loathsome, and if your being rejects My ordinances, so as not to perform all My commandments, so that you annul My covenant – then I will do the same to you; I will assign upon you panic, swelling lesions, and burning fever, which cause eyes to long and souls to suffer; you will sow your seeds in vain, for your enemies will eat it.”

Verse 17:

“I will set My face against you; you will be struck down before your enemies; those who hate you will subjugate you – you will flee with no one pursuing you.”

Verse 33:

“You, I will scatter among the nations; I will unsheathe the sword after you; your land will be desolate and your cities will be a ruin.” (Stone Edition Tanach, Leviticus 26:14-17, 33)

Explanation: These verses outline the consequences of rejecting God’s laws, including terror, disease, and defeat by enemies. The passage also mentions scattering among the nations as a punishment for covenant unfaithfulness. The ultimate consequence of continued disobedience is exile, signifying not just a loss of land but also a breakdown of community and identity.

Jeremiah’s Warning

Jeremiah 7:3-7

Verses 3-7:

“Thus said HASHEM, Master of Legions, God of Israel: Improve your ways and your deeds, and I will permit you to dwell in this place. Do not trust in false statements, saying, ‘The temple of HASHEM, the temple of HASHEM, the temple of HASHEM are they.’

But if you truly improve your ways and your deeds; if you will perform justice between a man and his fellow; if you will not oppress the stranger, the orphan, and the widow; if you will not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you will not follow other gods to your own harm; then I will permit you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your forefathers forever and ever.” (Stone Edition Tanach, Jeremiah 7:3-7)

Explanation: The prophet Jeremiah calls for genuine repentance and just actions, emphasizing that trust in mere religious rituals without a corresponding righteous life is futile. True reformation involves justice for the oppressed and avoidance of idolatry.

Ezekiel on Injustice

Ezekiel 22:29-31

Verses 29-31:

“The people of the land have practiced fraud and committed robbery; they have wronged the poor and the needy, and have oppressed the stranger without justice. I sought a man among them who could build the wall and stand in the breach before Me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found none. So I have poured out My fury upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of My anger; I have repaid their way upon their heads – the word of the Lord HASHEM/ELOHIM.” (Stone Edition Tanach, Ezekiel 22:29-31)

Explanation: Ezekiel condemns the social injustices of his time, including extortion, robbery, and oppression of the needy. The lack of someone to intercede on behalf of the land results in God’s wrath, highlighting the importance of justice and righteousness.

New Testament Perspectives

Bible – New Testament

Jesus’ Prophecy of Jerusalem’s Destruction

Luke 19:41-44

Verses 41-44:

“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.'” (New International Version, Luke 19:41-44)

Explanation: Jesus laments over Jerusalem, predicting its destruction due to the people’s failure to recognize God’s visitation. This passage illustrates the consequences of rejecting God’s messengers and the peace they bring.

Jesus’ Teaching on the Kingdom of God

Matthew 21:43

Verse 43:

“Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.” (New International Version, Matthew 21:43)

Explanation: Jesus warns that the kingdom of God will be taken from those who do not produce its fruits and given to others who will. This passage indicates that God’s favor is contingent upon bearing righteous fruits, not merely on heritage or lineage.

Romans 12:17-21

Verses 17-21:

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (New International Version, Romans 12:17-21)

Explanation: This passage underscores the importance of living at peace with others, refraining from revenge, and overcoming evil with good. It highlights the New Testament’s emphasis on love, forgiveness, and reconciliation as key components of righteous living.

James 2:14-17

Verses 14-17:

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (New International Version, James 2:14-17)

Explanation: This passage emphasizes that true faith is demonstrated through actions, particularly in caring for those in need. It underscores the biblical principle that justice and mercy are integral to living out one’s faith.

Galatians 5:14

Verse 14:

“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” (New International Version, Galatians 5:14)

Covenant Faithfulness

Both the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran emphasize the conditional nature of divine blessings. Faithfulness to God’s covenant and adherence to His commands bring prosperity and peace, while disobedience leads to severe consequences, including exile and loss of the land.

Justice and Righteousness

Justice and righteous behavior are repeatedly emphasized in all three scriptures. Failure to uphold these principles leads to divine judgment and loss of blessings. This theme underscores the need for ethical conduct in maintaining divine favor.

Prophetic Warnings

The Bible, the Torah, and the Quran contain prophetic warnings against oppression, idolatry, and shedding innocent blood. These warnings serve to call people back to righteous living and adherence to divine commands, illustrating the enduring relevance of these principles.

Explanation of God’s Rules and the Need for Obedience

To fully understand the consequences of disobedience and the importance of faithfulness, it is essential to recognize what God’s rules encompass in the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran. These rules can be broadly categorized into moral, ceremonial, and civil laws:

Moral Laws

Ten Commandments (Bible/Torah): Found in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:4-21, these include prohibitions against idolatry, theft, murder, adultery, false testimony, and coveting, as well as commands to honor parents and observe the Sabbath.

Great Commandments (Bible): Jesus summarized the law in Matthew 22:37-40, emphasizing love for God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind, and love for one’s neighbor as oneself.

Principles of Justice (Quran): Emphasized in various verses such as Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:8), which calls for justice and fairness even towards those one may dislike.

Ceremonial Laws

Bible/Torah: These laws pertain to Israel’s worship and rituals, including sacrifices, festivals, and dietary restrictions. They illustrate principles of holiness, purity, and devotion to God.

Quran: Similar principles are found in the rules governing prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and dietary laws, which emphasize purity, devotion, and community.

Civil Laws

Bible/Torah: These laws govern the social and political aspects of Israelite life, including justice, property rights, and treatment of foreigners and the vulnerable.

Quran: Civil laws in the Quran address justice, family life, inheritance, and the treatment of orphans and the poor, reflecting God’s concern for justice and equitable treatment within society.

Application to Modern Context

Three hands, light, brown and dark color, touching each others fingertips above a world map

While the biblical, Torah, and Quranic texts address ancient communities and their covenant relationships with God, the principles of justice, mercy, and the consequences of disobedience can be applied to any nation or people group. Extremist ideologies that justify violence and the eradication of another nation are fundamentally opposed to the call for justice, mercy, and the sanctity of human life found in all three scriptures.

In conclusion, the perspectives on land, territory, and justice from the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran call for covenant faithfulness, righteous living, and just treatment of others. These principles are timeless and offer valuable guidance for resolving conflicts, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in a manner that seeks peace and justice for all involved.

Background of the conflict between Israel and Palestine is a long-standing and deeply complex issue with roots that can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It involves a clash of national identities, territorial disputes, and historical grievances. Here’s a brief overview of key aspects of the conflict:

Historical Context

Late 19th Century: The roots of the conflict can be partially traced to the growth of nationalist movements among Jews (Zionism) and among Arabs in the Ottoman Empire. Jewish immigration to Palestine increased, driven by the desire for a homeland where Jews could escape persecution.

1947-1948: Following the end of British Mandate for Palestine, the United Nations proposed a plan to partition Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. This proposal was accepted by Jewish leaders but rejected by Arab leaders. In 1948, the State of Israel was declared, leading to the first Arab-Israeli war. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians became refugees.

1967 Six-Day War: Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights, and Sinai Peninsula. This significantly shaped the territorial and political landscape of the conflict.

Palestine Partition Map Majority Proposal

A sketch map of the plan on partition of Palestine, with economic union, proposed by the majority of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine. The plan envisages the division of Palestine into 3 parts: a Jewish state, an Arab State (dark tint), and the City of Jerusalem (white), to be placed under an International Trusteeship system. 1947, United Nations (Lake Success).

Key Issues

Territorial Disputes: The status of Jerusalem, borders, and Israeli settlements in the West Bank are major sticking points. Palestinians seek the establishment of an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital, areas that were occupied by Israel during the 1967 war.

Security Concerns: Israel cites security concerns as reasons for retaining control over certain territories and for military actions. The construction of barriers and checkpoints, as well as military operations, are viewed as necessary for the security of its citizens.

Refugees: The right of return for Palestinian refugees who were displaced in 1948 and their descendants is a critical and contentious issue.

Violence and Incitement: Both sides accuse each other of incitement and violence. The conflict has seen periods of intense violence, uprisings (Intifadas), and numerous attempts at negotiation.

Attempts at Peace

Several attempts have been made to resolve the conflict, including the Oslo Accords in the 1990s, which created the Palestinian Authority and set a framework for future negotiations, and the Camp David Summit in 2000. Despite these efforts, the background shows a lasting peace agreement has not been achieved, and the conflict persists, marked by cycles of violence and temporary ceasefires.

The background shows that the situation is highly dynamic, influenced by changes in political leadership, regional dynamics, and international intervention. It remains one of the most challenging and intractable conflicts in modern history. A long-standing and deeply complex issue with roots that can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Democracy can never be taken for granted. In English further down.

In english

Democracy can never be taken for granted

Democracy can never be taken for granted; it is something everyone must work for every day. In history books we can read about how different people were involved in working out democratic values and through their voice managed to create democracy. Today, we rarely reflect on democracy and what it really means to us. Democracy is important to all of us.

What is Democracy?

Democracy is a state of governance that is based on citizens through public and safe elections where everyone should be able to participate and think about how the country should be governed. Another democratic and important basic idea is that people should be allowed to think and express their views openly.

Freedom

In Sweden we have freedom of expression, freedom of the press, courts etc. We can constantly contribute to a safer world by engaging daily and relying on democratic values to see everyone and contribute to a securer and safer world. More and more countries are becoming more authoritarian and the process is slow and discreet. Protecting democracy has become increasingly important.

Why is democracy important?

There are many reasons and the following are only a selection among many more.

You can change the lives of others by protecting democratic grounds, for example by expressing your opinion or helping others to make their voices heard.

If you, for example, in your workplace ignore to ensure that democracy is improved, gaps and exclusion are created. Basic values create security and must be central both in the workplace and in social life.

You have the right to vote in general elections and influence power and society.

Democracy means constant prevention of violent extremism. We can resist what we believe is wrong and avoid extremism, etc.

We have freedom of opinion and can debate most things about it in the best way. Tolerance can be created between people. You gain a greater understanding of each other’s differences and similarities.

We can meet the needs of many people and help others. We can make people’s voices heard and avoid silence.

Democracy means that everyone has the right to vote. By constantly safeguarding democracy, we can strive for greater equality.

We can constantly influence each other and share basic values about what is right and wrong.

Everyone can make a difference by engaging in important issues.

We can influence important things in the workplace. Which can contribute to an improved working environment.

Collaborations and charity work can constantly continue to develop.

We can avoid dictatorship by constantly improving democracy and protecting democracy.

Based on the UNs convention of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, we can contribute to a safer world for all on the basis of peace and security. Secure children’s upbringing.

With democracy, everyone can stand up and defend democratic values.

Avoid corrupt countries without civil influence. Journalists can constantly review power and have freedom of the press. The parliament can also control the government and reduce corruption and inaccuracies so that the government does its job right.

Everyone has the right to highlight important issues and problems. Illuminate the politicians.

Influencing social development based on what we believe benefits most. Improve and change.

Anyone can start and run a business.

Reduce economic inequality.

Reduce women’s hatred and contribute to economic and social security regardless of gender.

Live in freedom and security.

We currently have laws that contribute to equal treatment regardless of nationality, religion, sexual orientation, and disabilities. Rights are based on democracy and laws are designed to protect rights.

Equal treatment plans, meetings and advice, etc., help to ventilate questions, thoughts and values in different contexts.

People’s opinions drive politicians and we understand politics and society more easily.

Understanding of different views of life and outlook on life.

What happens if democracy is not valued?

In Sweden and many other countries, democracy is taken for granted. More people than ever live in democracies today, but the quality of democracies is deteriorating, and more and more populist alternatives are taking place. According to the Democracy Index, the number of full-fledged democracies in the EU has decreased from 17 countries to 12 countries between 2006 and 2019.

We need to continue to safeguard democracy in all countries.

If we do not protect democracy, society risks becoming increasingly authoritarian. Elected politicians can undermine democratic rule and society can go from democracy to dictatorship. Society can become more corrupt. It can avail to make it more difficult to implement fair and free elections, civil liberties, independent legal systems and freedom of the press can be impaired or eliminated. Countries can slowly become increasingly undemocratic. The gaps are widening, and exclusion is growing while people are being controlled by the regime. We will be without democracy and all of the above benefits. The consequences are huge, and we can eventually end up living in an insecure and unpredictable society. The process is usually slow and, in many steps, therefore, democracy needs to be constantly defended.

Become a Citizen of Democracy for free
